It may be the new platform of the big N that is preventing the switch to the new engine in the third part of the trilogy, which is still in development.
The Final Fantasy VII Remake Nintendo Switch 2 version is unlikely to feature a 60 FPS mode, despite recent footage suggesting otherwise. This was discussed by the Digital Foundry editors in their weekly podcast, which can be seen below. They carefully examined the game’s new footage, which appeared in a recent Creator’s Voice video, and compared it to clips recorded on the PlayStation 5 in Performance Mode, highlighting the differences between the two versions. Despite the blurrier image, more noticeable hair dithering, and shallower depth of field, the Nintendo Switch 2 version still holds up pretty well.
What Final Fantasy VII Remake on Nintendo Switch 2 is unlikely to offer, unlike the PlayStation 5 version, is a 60 FPS mode. In the Creator’s Voice video, the iconic scene where Cloud jumps off the train just before the mission to destroy the reactor begins runs at 60 FPS, which initially suggested that the Nintendo Switch 2 version would support this frame rate. However, Digital Foundry highlighted in their analysis that the quality of Cloud’s hair in the footage was even better than on the PS5 in Performance Mode, implying the footage likely comes from the PC port, not from the Switch 2 version.
In the aforementioned Creator’s Voice video, Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy VII Remake, hinted that the full remake trilogy may also be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. According to Digital Foundry, this might suggest that the as-yet-unannounced third installment of the trilogy might not switch to Unreal Engine 5. Although using UE5 could potentially resolve some of the visual issues seen in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, there’s currently no indication that UE5 runs well on the Switch 2, nor that the visual assets could be scaled down significantly while still retaining a presentable appearance. Since the developers hope to release Part 3 as soon as possible, which would be harder to achieve with an engine switch, this comment may hint at the technical path the next game will follow.
Final Fantasy VII Remake is coming to Nintendo Switch 2, but no release date has been announced yet.
