Ported to Unreal Engine 5, the game was released without any fanfare, as a surprise for the current-gen consoles and PC.
It’s been almost six years since we reviewed the original The Sinking City back in July 2019, and you can read our detailed thoughts here. Since then, several years have passed, and Frogwares has weathered war, as the studio is based in Ukraine. The team surprised fans by unexpectedly launching a remastered version for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
If you already own the original game, you don’t need to pay for the remaster—Frogwares is offering it for free to existing players. If you don’t, you can still buy The Sinking City Remastered for 50% off for a limited time ($20 on PC, $25 on console, roughly 8,000–10,000 HUF), which is a fair offer from the developers.
The remaster runs on Unreal Engine 5, significantly improving the visual presentation of the original game. You can get a feel for the upgrade in the embedded video below. Frogwares has also enhanced in-game locations with more detail and additional objects, upgraded to 4K textures, improved reflections, and added a photo mode. On PC, Nvidia DLSS, AMD FSR, and TSR upscaling are all supported. A few gameplay tweaks and new accessibility features are included as well.
“We have big plans for The Sinking City IP, starting with the sequel and beyond. After our well-publicized struggles with the original, it feels amazing to have this positive moment be part of the game’s twisted history, and for us to be the ones who fully decide it. Making it free for all our existing fans is our way of giving back to them for supporting us through thick and thin all this time,” said Sergiy Oganesyan, Frogwares’ publishing director.
If you’ve missed out on The Sinking City until now, this might be the perfect opportunity to dive in.
