Square Enix Has a Bold 3-Year Reboot Plan — Final Fantasy’s Future Starts Now

Square Enix isn’t leaving anything to speculation: the Final Fantasy creators are launching a full-scale, three-year reboot to shift focus from quantity to quality. Strategic restructuring and cross-platform growth are at the heart of their long-term vision.

In recent months, Square Enix has gone radio silent. Since the launch of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, there have been no major updates on their iconic franchises. But behind the scenes, a significant internal reset is in motion — one that could redefine the studio’s future.

The company’s latest financial report reveals a clear roadmap: a three-year overhaul focused on fewer but better titles. Part of this approach includes a major push for cross-platform launches, meaning future Square Enix games will debut simultaneously on multiple systems. To make this happen, development teams are being reorganized around flagship projects.

Inside Square Enix’s Strategic Pivot

As part of the overhaul, Square Enix has made the tough call to cancel the mobile game Kingdom Hearts Missing Link to free up resources for Kingdom Hearts 4. “We chose to halt certain titles and reallocate funds to polish others, ensuring our development strategy focuses on select, high-potential games,” the report reads (via VGC).

Another key change: all future titles will now be developed entirely in-house. This move is intended to foster better knowledge sharing and raise the overall quality bar. “For the games currently in development, we’ve adopted measures like platform expansion, diversified payment options, and operating cost reduction to boost profitability,” the company explains.
