A Previously Touted Feature Isn’t Going to Be In the Nintendo Switch 2! [VIDEO]

Nintendo didn’t want to admit it for a long time, but just three weeks before launch, they’ve finally confirmed what’s really going on…

Nintendo has finally cleared up the confusion surrounding the Nintendo Switch 2. The console does support variable refresh rate (VRR) in handheld mode—but it does not support VRR in docked mode.

The confusion started back in early April after the console’s full reveal, when Nintendo’s US, Canadian, UK, and European websites listed VRR support for docked mode. Later, the US and Canadian sites quietly removed the mention, though it remained on the UK and EU pages—until those were updated too.

So does it support VRR in docked mode or not? The removal hinted at a “no,” but Nintendo only gave a clear response just now, in a statement to Nintendo Life: they apologized for publishing incorrect info and confirmed that VRR is supported in handheld mode only.

When asked whether VRR might arrive later via a firmware update, they replied that they had nothing to announce on the subject—which, in corporate speak, often means “yes, but not yet.”

Still, it’s odd that it took this long for Nintendo to be clear, and the delay makes it look like they were trying to avoid backlash. Maybe they feared people wouldn’t buy the Switch 2 without VRR support in docked mode, and so they stalled until the last minute. If that’s true, it’s a sneaky move by Nintendo.

The Nintendo Switch 2 officially launches on June 5.
