As the release approaches, a number of things are changing around this multiplayer vehicular combat game—though the developers at Caged Element remain the same.
Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks version 1.0 will launch on Steam on May 22, but no longer under Plaion. The game has changed publishers, and Wired Productions is now handling the title. It will no longer be free-to-play—it’s switching to a paid model (€16 / ~$16 USD). Anyone who played during Early Access will receive the full version for free. The game had over 250,000 players under Plaion during Early Access.
“What a wild ride! We’ve loved every moment working with Caged Element on Speed Freeks, which has been especially enjoyable thanks to the community’s passion, energy, and commitment to the game. With their help, we’ve laid a solid foundation for the game and are thrilled to see it reach version 1.0. We wish Wired Productions and Caged Element nothing but success as they head full-throttle toward launch,” said Paul Jeal, senior brand manager at Plaion.
“We set out to make the Orkiest Warhammer 40,000 game. Through our Early Access period, thousands of people helped us achieve that goal, along with our previous publisher, Plaion. Now, with Wired Productions picking up the torch, we’re launching out of Early Access and into version 1.0 with an approach we think players will appreciate and enjoy. We thank both partners for their dedication to the game, as well as Games Workshop. We’re, of course, very happy to be back with our friends at Wired Productions since we previously collaborated with them on Grip,” added Chris Mallinson, game director at Caged Element.
“Reuniting with Caged Element feels like coming home. Huge thanks to Plaion for the smooth and respectful handover that has been months in the making. The work that’s gone into Early Access, shaped by player feedback, has been enormous. Everyone at Wired Productions is excited to be working with our friends at Caged Element again. Launch is just the beginning. We’ve got big plans and plenty of surprises coming your way,” said Leo Zullo, managing director and co-founder of Wired Productions.
With the 1.0 update, all microtransactions will be removed from the game. As of May 22, the in-game store in Warhammer 40K: Speed Freeks will be gone.
