Will There Be a Current-Gen Re-Release of Red Dead Redemption 2?

Rockstar and Take-Two might be turning to another easy cash-grab strategy—they’ve done it more than once already…

Rumors are circulating online that a Red Dead Redemption 2 port is in the works for Nintendo Switch 2, alongside enhanced versions for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. GameReactor reported this based on sources close to Rockstar Games. According to them, Rockstar is working on a re-release of the 2018 open-world title originally launched on PS4 and Xbox One, with a possible release later this year.

In addition to the ports, Rockstar is reportedly developing a patch for the PS5/Xbox Series that will enhance visuals and performance. This update may drop alongside or after the Switch 2 version.

This is where we start to doubt the rumor: it’s not Rockstar’s style to offer free upgrades for previous-gen titles. They didn’t do it for GTA V—and they re-released it twice, having originally launched it on PS3 and Xbox 360. Still, from a business standpoint, it makes sense: GTA VI has been pushed to May 2026, and Rockstar could still earn some revenue during this fiscal year (which ends in March).

A Nintendo Switch 2 version is also plausible, as the game ran on last-gen hardware and Nintendo’s upcoming console is expected to match that power level. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick also recently praised the Switch 2’s catalog potential in public statements.

Even so, without official confirmation, everything written above must be taken with a grain of salt. Until Rockstar officially announces that the Wild West epic will be available on a docked-mode VRR-less Switch 2 (as mentioned in today’s news), it’s all just speculation.

Still, a Switch 2 version doesn’t sound like a bad idea. It could be visually impressive and have real potential.
