MOVIE NEWS – Jurassic Park fans are counting down to the return of the universe Steven Spielberg first brought to life in 1993. Jurassic World: Rebirth claims to get back to the pop culture roots that once convinced us dinosaurs never truly went extinct. But for director Gareth Edwards, signing on wasn’t a dream come true—he bluntly admitted he wanted to hate the whole thing at first.
Speaking to SFX Magazine, Edwards described how he first came across the Rebirth script, a brand new Jurassic World installment starring Scarlett Johansson. The movie reboots the dino franchise with new characters and fresh storylines. After The Creator, Edwards was looking forward to a break—but reading the script changed everything:
“I read this screenplay wanting to hate it because I just wanted to have a break. I was all ready for the polite, ‘No.’ Like, ‘Oh, it was really good, but I just want to do my own thing. Thank you for considering me.’ I got to the end of the screenplay and was like, ‘Oh sh-t, it’s good. Damn it.’
All the characters really popped out. It was just one of those things where it was like, I can’t not do this. Also, it was all going to be done in about a year. It was just like, ‘Okay, I’m not going to be able to do anything but this.’ But it was an opportunity of a lifetime, to some extent. I dove in, really. We’re only just coming up for air.”
Colin Trevorrow is eager to see what the new generation does with Jurassic World.
Jurassic World: Rebirth hits theaters July 2, 2025, starring Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Rupert Friend and Luna Blaise. Produced by Universal Pictures, Amblin Entertainment, and The Kennedy/Marshall Company.
Why Gareth Edwards Is the Perfect Choice for the ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ Reboot
After Jurassic World: Dominion proved nostalgia alone isn’t enough, the franchise needed a full reset. It wasn’t just about getting a new director, but a new story vision, led by David Koepp (writer of the original Jurassic Park and the ’97 sequel). Only someone who can make dinosaurs terrifying again could revive the Jurassic world. Gareth Edwards has already shown he’s the man for the job: Godzilla was a stellar reboot, and Rogue One proved he could put his own stamp on even the biggest franchises.
Jurassic World: Rebirth already looks scarier and more intense than the last few entries, and maybe the secret is finally embracing the idea that these aren’t just adventure films, but horror movies where the humans are never really safe.
