MOVIE NEWS – Kevin Costner’s epic western is riding a rougher trail than any cowboy could handle. Fans have been itching for Chapter 2 since last year, but Horizon: An American Saga’s second act keeps sinking further into Hollywood quicksand. Will Costner’s dream ever gallop onto the big screen, or is this frontier legend fated to fade away?
The release odds for Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 are as wild as the Old West. Kevin Costner’s self-funded passion project hasn’t exactly saved the western genre like the writer-director hoped. Chapter 1 hit theaters last year to so-so reviews but earned devoted fans on streaming.
Chapter 2 is filmed, edited, and ready—now all that’s needed is a green light from New Line Cinema. Like moviegoers everywhere, Danny Huston is eager to see it in theaters, but even he can’t say if or when it’ll happen.
The obstacles keep piling up: there’s no theatrical or digital release date. With the first movie’s box office flop, some assume Chapter 2 will drop straight to streaming, but insiders say Costner is fighting hard for a big screen release. Even the cast is in the dark—Huston admits “the film is working at its own pace.”
If Costner had gotten his wish, the sequel would’ve dropped a year ago. The first film premiered June 28, 2024, with Chapter 2 originally slated for August 16. That quick follow-up turned into a yearlong wait, with no end in sight.
The hurdles don’t stop there. The first film made just $38.7 million worldwide, and now several lawsuits—two about financing and props, a third about an unplanned sex scene—are making Chapter 2’s journey even harder.
