Ghost of Yōtei Nearly Matches Its Predecessor in Sales

Semi-official sales data for Sony’s latest exclusive title reveal that Ghost of Yōtei is off to a stellar start. For PlayStation, this was exactly the kind of success it needed — and while it trails Ghost of Tsushima by a small margin, the numbers speak for themselves.

According to UK physical sales data and multiple estimates, Sucker Punch Productions’ newest game has already sold over 1.6 million copies — or more than 2 million if retailer sales are included. That’s only slightly below the performance of Ghost of Tsushima, which moved 2.4 million copies in its first three days and became the fastest-selling new IP in PlayStation 4 history.

Ghost of Tsushima launched on July 17, 2020, when most of the world was still under pandemic restrictions — a time when gaming saw unprecedented revenue highs as people had more time to play. The title also benefited from the PS4’s massive 110-million-unit install base, compared to the PS5’s 80 million units today. Considering these differences, Ghost of Yōtei’s success is even more impressive.

Strong Numbers, Smaller Market

Despite a similar production budget of around $60 million, Ghost of Yōtei currently outpaces all major PS5 releases since Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 — even surpassing Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. According to Rhys Elliott from Alinea Analytics, over 93% of Ghost of Tsushima players have already picked up the new entry, proving how loyal the fanbase remains.

Alinea’s latest report also highlights another major success story: Battlefield 6, which has achieved 1.8 million pre-orders on Steam and sits on 3.5 million wishlists. It seems 2025 is shaping up to be a major year for the industry — and Sony has every reason to celebrate its newest samurai epic.
