Starfield is only days away from landing on PlayStation 5, and Bethesda has finally outlined how the game takes advantage of Sony’s hardware. This is not just a straight platform port either, because the PS5 version leans into several console-specific features to make the experience feel more tailored.
Starfield appears to fit naturally on PlayStation 5, with the console’s hardware helping keep exploration across the Settled Systems smooth and responsive. On PlayStation 5 Pro, players can choose the presentation style that best suits how they want to play. Pro Visual Mode outputs a final 4K image while targeting 30 FPS for maximum visual fidelity. Pro Performance Mode instead aims for 60 FPS to deliver a faster and more fluid experience. Both options are powered by PSSR, or PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, and the game supports trophies, SSD optimization, and the full suite of DualSense enhancements on both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro.
You are meant to feel the difference with every shot. The adaptive triggers on L2 and R2 add physical resistance and feedback, giving each weapon type, whether used on foot or in space combat, its own distinct sensation. The DualSense light bar also reacts to the action by changing color based on your health while on the ground or your ship’s condition while in space. It flashes red when danger is immediate, then settles back to white when things are under control again.
The touchpad is also used to keep players moving through the game without breaking the flow of exploration. Pressing the left side switches point of view, pressing the right side opens the map, and holding the right side activates the hand scanner. Swiping in different directions brings up major menus such as Inventory, Missions, and Skills. Audio logs and ship intercom chatter are routed directly through the DualSense controller speaker as well, adding another layer of immersion to life among the stars.
Starfield arrives on PlayStation 5 on April 7. The same day also brings the game’s free Free Lanes update and the Terran Armada story DLC.
