The Fable reboot, announced years ago, may not end up hitting its currently planned release window.
Playground Games’ long-awaited Fable reboot finally got a detailed showing during January’s Xbox Developer Direct, when the team announced a fall release window for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. But fall is a pretty broad window, and that is before even getting into the fact that Grand Theft Auto VI is set to launch on November 19, unless it gets delayed for a third time. Nobody really wants to be anywhere near Rockstar’s game, which is practically guaranteed to suck all the oxygen out of the industry for a while.
That could lead to Playground Games delaying Fable once again. Jeff Grubb discussed the rumor and explained that the game has already seen a small internal delay. Playground is reportedly still targeting a 2026 release, but if it ends up landing too close to Grand Theft Auto VI, it could easily be pushed all the way to 2027 so it does not get crushed by Rockstar’s release.
“I can say that I’ve heard Fable has been delayed internally. That doesn’t mean it’s coming next year. It sounds like they’re still trying to get it out this year, but they are worried about Grand Theft Auto VI. So if it slips to after GTA VI, that could push it into December, which makes it a strong candidate for a 2027 delay. So while Xbox has a lot of games coming this year, this is still one of the ones with a big question mark around it”, Grubb said.
The game was originally planned for 2025, but Playground asked for and received more time for polish, moving the release into 2026. Based on these rumors, there is a real chance it may miss even that new target. Fable fans will probably be willing to wait a little longer, though, if that means a more polished game with a better shot at success and a better chance of leading to more entries in the fantasy action-RPG series.
