SEGA News: Virtua Fighter 6 Leaked, Something’s Brewing With Crazy Taxi! [VIDEO]

Two franchises are making waves at SEGA – one officially and one unofficially (or at least not yet).

We haven’t heard much about the new Virtua Fighter, which has been in development for a while. However, a major leak revealed the game’s title, Virtua Fighter 6: Crossroads, and showed the first gameplay footage, likely prepared for an upcoming announcement. Though short and of poor quality, the video effectively showcases the game’s stunning graphics. The animations, in particular, appear incredibly advanced. They far surpass anything we’ve seen in fighting games thus far and make an unprecedentedly strong impression, even at this early stage of development.

In addition to offering a glimpse of the character roster and showing the first proper gameplay footage outside the gym that was shown last year, the leaked footage features members of the development team discussing the game. The reveal of the name and the developers’ discussion of the game suggest that this will be the official reveal trailer. Since both the PlayStation State of Play and the Summer Game Fest are about two weeks away, SEGA might release the trailer around that time. However, the fighting game community’s attention is focused on this year’s EVO (June 26-28), so it might show up there; Virtua Fighter 5: R.E.V.O. World Stage is also on the list of playable titles.

SEGA announced the latest installment in the Crazy Taxi series during The Game Awards in 2023, but there has been no news about the highly anticipated sequel since then. However, after more than six years of silence, a teaser video has appeared on the Crazy Taxi Twitter account. The video shows the iconic taxi light illuminating the top of the brand’s signature yellow convertible taxi. The reboot is being developed by SEGA Sapporo Studio, established in December 2021. This team assists in developing numerous SEGA games. In 2024, SEGA Sapporo released a recruitment video featuring Kenji Kanno, the director of the original game. According to the video, the development team tested ways to adapt the classic Crazy Taxi gameplay, in which players must transport passengers to their destinations as quickly as possible, into a multiplayer game world. It is unclear whether this version of the game reflects what SEGA is preparing to reveal.

The original Crazy Taxi debuted in arcades in 1999, but the 2000 SEGA Dreamcast brought it success. It became the console’s third-best-selling game in the United States. The game spawned several sequels and spin-offs, but the last new main entry in the series was Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller, released 22 years ago as an Xbox exclusive.
