SEGA is reportedly planning to re-release Sonic Frontiers. Since the source of the rumor is considered highly credible, this information can essentially be treated as semi-official.
According to reports, the Definitive Edition of Sonic Frontiers will be released next month. Billbill-kun has previously published retail listings ahead of official announcements on multiple occasions, so this claim is considered reliable. On Deallabs, the insider reported that the expanded re-release of Sonic Frontiers will be released on June 23. The Definitive Edition will reportedly include all previously released updates and DLC. The Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game will have technical enhancements compared to the original Nintendo Switch version.
It will be available for $50 on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. According to the leaker, the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game will be available in physical form. It is currently unknown if other platforms will have physical releases. The question, of course, is whether the Switch 2 port will be a game key card or if the full game will be on the cartridge.
Sonic Frontiers was released in 2022 and received three updates. The first update, Sights, Sound, and Speed, was released in March 2023. It added new challenge modes, such as Battle Rush and Cyber Space Challenge, as well as a photo mode and a jukebox mode. The second update followed in June 2023. Sonic’s Birthday Bash introduced a New Game+ mode, new collectible Koco items, new Open Zone activities, and the ability to decorate the game with birthday items. The third update, titled The Final Horizon, was released in October 2023. It’s now been over two years since then.
We can probably expect SEGA to officially announce the Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition during Summer Game Fest. $50 for a complete edition more than two years after the game’s release seems a bit steep, but whatever. SEGA made the decision, and that’s that.
