FromSoftware: What Can We Expect from the Japanese Team in the Near Future?

Among other things, we might see Project FMC from FromSoftware soon, perhaps during the flurry of announcements in early summer.

A multiplatform title, Project FMC is reportedly deep into development and at such an advanced stage that it could be released soon. Hidetaka Miyazaki is working on The Duskbloods, and several Elden Ring leads have worked at Nightreign. However, Masaru Yamamura, the creator of Sekiro’s combat system, disappeared without a trace in 2023, as did several other leads. Last year, Miyazaki stated that they still intend to actively develop single-player games of this kind that follow a more traditional style. Project FMC could finally mark a return to this style of game.

Several official statements have been made regarding future projects. In April 2023, Yasuhiro Kitao said they are developing multiple titles simultaneously and several teams are working on different projects. They hope to stagger releases in the future and bring something new and exciting at not-too-long intervals. FromSoftware has achieved this by releasing a new project every year since 2022.

In June 2024, Miyazaki stated that the difficulty curve and sense of achievement would always be at the core of his game design and direction. However, he mentioned that there may be different themes or central elements in another game, which will be released at a later date when he can discuss it in more detail. Regarding FromSoftware’s new era, he said it would be hard to sum up the next chapter in one word. But if he had to, he believes it boils down to value and creation.

In his view, the words he uses to describe it—fantasy, world-building, difficulty level, and the satisfaction derived from achievements—are perhaps more closely tied to his own values than to the company itself. However, these new, up-and-coming directors and game designers—the company’s own talent—may not share the same values. He believes that they will introduce the world to the so-called “new FromSoftware,” as well as the games they will develop in the future.

Since then, the studio has unveiled two experimental games that deviate from their traditional style: Elden Ring: Nightreign and The Duskbloods. In June 2024, Miyazaki stated that combat has become much more fluid and active, one of the defining features of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. He believes they can refine and polish this mechanic even further. He would love to work on a game evoking themes from anime series such as Aura Battler Dunbine and The Vision of Escaflowne, but he acknowledges that it would be incredibly difficult. Nevertheless, he would love to work on such a game.

Miyazaki is a big fan of Magic: The Gathering and has expressed interest in working on a JRPG.
