A new interview suggests that the new version of Rayman Legends will be able to keep pace with what we see on PlayStation 5 on Nintendo’s new hybrid platform.
Despite not being the most powerful console of the current generation, the Nintendo Switch 2 has clearly demonstrated what it can do in games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Star Wars Outlaws, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: it delivers an excellent experience that does not feel downgraded compared with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. Later this year, Ubisoft will push the system even further, delivering full ray tracing at 4K resolution and 60 FPS in Rayman Legends Retold, an experience that matches what is available on other consoles in several respects, according to Fabien Delpiano, technical advisor at Ubisoft Montpellier.
Thanks to Nvidia DLSS support, the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Rayman Legends Retold will run at 4K resolution when docked, where power consumption is not a problem, and at 1080p in handheld mode. According to Delpiano, however, Rayman Legends Retold will also compete with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in other areas, such as the amount of detail on screen.
“As you may know, ray tracing is quite costly. With Star Wars: Outlaws on Switch 2, they address this by running at 30 FPS, but we targeted 60 FPS on all platforms, from the simplest one, the Switch 2, to the most advanced, a PlayStation 5 Pro or high-end PC, so that was quite a challenge… we really pushed Snowdrop to its limits to raise the frame rate from 30 to 60 FPS. One trick we used to achieve that quality was lowering the resolution. Most GPU resources depend on resolution, so the more we reduce the resolution, the less costly it becomes.
Essentially, on Nintendo Switch 2, we are roughly on the same level as the Xbox Series S version in terms of quality. We developed a system in which the level of detail is not based on distance from individual environmental elements, but on proportion and scale, so depending on the size of the character on screen, the level of detail changes accordingly… the amount of detail shown on PlayStation 5 is approximately the same as what appears on Nintendo Switch 2” – Delpiano said in a new interview with VGC.
Even in multiplayer mode, the Nintendo Switch 2 maintains the same level of detail while running the game at 60 FPS. Since the Nintendo Switch 2 promises an excellent experience with Rayman Legends Retold, the return of the series will be notable, and thanks to some additional content, it could become one of the best entries in the series when it launches on October 1 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
