Activision and Toys for Bob have announced Spyro: A Realm Beyond, a new entry that sends the purple dragon on his first completely original adventure in nearly two decades. The game launches in spring 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store.
The Spyro series is finally returning with more than repackaged nostalgia. Activision and Toys for Bob have officially announced Spyro: A Realm Beyond, which the publisher is effectively positioning as Spyro the Dragon 4: a sequel built around a fresh world, expanded exploration, and new gameplay systems designed to evolve the classic formula rather than simply repeat it.
The biggest promise in the announcement is true dragon flight. Not gliding, not movement restricted to a limited set of flight stages, but full dragon flight. That could be a major shift for the series, where aerial movement has always mattered but has usually been carefully contained. A Realm Beyond is instead built around letting players explore this new realm more freely than ever before.
A New World, New Enemies, and Tom Kenny’s Return
The story finds Spyro stranded in a strange and wondrous realm, searching for a way home. His journey is interrupted by the arrival of a vicious invading force known as the Scavs, forcing the purple dragon to make new allies and protect this realm before it is changed forever. Exploration will let players soar above vibrant landscapes, weave between treetops, dive from massive landmarks, and chain together climbs, dives, and tight turns as they move through the world in their own way.
Toys for Bob is designing the new entry to welcome a new generation while still giving long-time fans something genuinely fresh. Tom Kenny’s return as the voice of Spyro is an important part of that continuity. Bringing back the iconic voice makes the studio’s intent clear: this is not about cutting the series away from its past, but carrying that identity into a bolder, larger-scale sequel.
Spyro: A Realm Beyond is in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC, with the PC version coming through Steam and the Microsoft Store. A precise date has not been announced yet, only a spring 2027 release window. Based on the reveal, Toys for Bob clearly wants the next Spyro to be more than a safe return. It wants this to be the beginning of a freer, more modern era for the purple dragon.
