MOVIE NEWS – The world of one of the 21st century’s best action and science fiction films may be preparing another return, while 81-year-old George Miller is reportedly looking for a new studio to continue the Mad Max saga.
Despite the failure of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, George Miller does not seem to have given up on delivering another Mad Max film to audiences. The possibility of the franchise returning as a television series had already surfaced earlier, but more reliable industry sources now suggest that this may not be the only project in motion, as a final, definitive feature film could also be part of the plan. Miller is currently looking for a producing partner for that film, since Warner Bros. does not appear especially interested in any new projects connected to the franchise at the moment.
That was to be expected, given that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga did not exactly dominate the box office: it grossed around $174 million worldwide, barely more than its production budget. Miller, however, is far from giving up at 81, and according to Puck, he has already begun contacting several rival studios in Hollywood. Amazon, Sony, and Universal are reportedly among those interested in the possibility, although no official agreement has been announced for now.
Who will win the bid? If Miller really intends to make both a film and a television series, Amazon immediately looks like the most obvious candidate, since it could handle the theatrical and streaming sides of the package under one roof. For the moment, however, there are no further details, and the only suggestion is that Miller’s longer-term goal may be to sell the IP to the highest bidder once all this is released, allowing others to try to exploit the Mad Max name afterward. Whether audiences will be eager to see Mad Max without George Miller is another matter entirely.
The Director Has Been Circling Mad Max: The Wasteland for Years
As mentioned earlier, reports in late 2025 claimed that Miller was turning his Mad Max: The Wasteland idea into a series. That project would essentially chronicle the previous year in the life of Max Rockatansky, Tom Hardy’s character, and would be set chronologically just before he begins to interact with Furiosa and the Wives in Mad Max: Fury Road. The story would explain how Max reached that point of isolation, damage, and near-madness in which we find him at the beginning of the 2015 film. Now that both a film and a series are reportedly in the mix, it is unclear how Miller would approach all of this, but hopefully the pieces eventually come together.
A Saga Built on Five Very Strong Films
Five films have been released so far in this universe, along with a highly recommended open-world video game developed by Avalanche Studios. The first Mad Max, released in 1979, made history by creating a post-apocalyptic action story on a very low budget with Mel Gibson in the lead role, while its sequel, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, truly defined the series in 1981. A more modest third installment followed with Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1985, and Miller would not return to the franchise until 2015 with Mad Max: Fury Road, which many consider one of the best action and science fiction films of the last two decades.
Mad Max: Fury Road won six Academy Awards, including Best Editing, and remains essential viewing for anyone who enjoys brutally tight, visually overwhelming, but precisely constructed action cinema. The problem was that the film was not the kind of box office smash its critical reputation might have suggested, which led to a wait of almost ten years for the prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Although that film was also well received by a significant part of the critical community, it did not achieve major theatrical success, which has led to the current situation: Miller still wants to move forward, but the future of the franchise no longer appears to be running through a clear Warner Bros. pipeline, and instead needs a new partner, a new structure, and probably a new appetite for risk.
