Bobby Prince, the Legendary Composer Behind Doom and Wolfenstein 3D, Has Died

Robert Caskin Prince III, better known to the game industry as Bobby Prince, died on June 16 at the age of 81. The legendary composer and sound designer helped define the sound of the early FPS, and his work remains inseparable from the legacy of Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Catacomb 3-D, and many other classic PC games.

News of Bobby Prince’s death was confirmed through an obituary posted on Legacy. The tribute stated that “those closest to Bobby knew him not only for his extraordinary accomplishments but for his kindness, humor, humility, generosity, creativity, and deep love of family.” It also remembered that “whether composing music, telling stories, playing guitar, sharing laughter, or offering encouragement, he approached life with gratitude and an open heart.”

Prince created music and sound effects for dozens of classic PC games, including Doom, Doom II, Wolfenstein 3D, and many other titles that helped shape gaming culture in the 1990s. His score for Doom in particular became one of the most celebrated videogame soundtracks in the medium’s history, and it was recently added to the US Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. Its sound was packed with nods to the heavy metal scene of the era, with Prince drawing inspiration from bands including Metallica, Judas Priest, and Diamond Head.

His work could be heard throughout the games released by id Software, Apogee, and 3D Realms in the 1990s. Lesser-known but important credits included Blake Stone, Bio Menace, and certain episodes of the Commander Keen platformers, while he also worked with Lee Jackson on both Duke Nukem 3D and Rise of the Triad. Jackson remembered Prince on Bluesky as “a teacher, a mentor, and a friend,” writing: “We worked together so well on Duke Nukem 3D that we could anticipate what the other was going to do next. If it weren’t for him, I’d probably be stuck in a tech room somewhere still. Au revoir, Bobby. You’re definitely missed.”

id Software co-founder Tom Hall also shared his memories of Prince on Bluesky. “His music legacy will live on, making inspired music for Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, countless others. A true legend. And such a nice man, great musician, wonderful, fun-loving man, nothing but happy memories of him. A loss to the world.”
