MOVIE NEWS – Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which still holds a perfect 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, is officially returning, and Netflix has now revealed a new character from its next chapter. Following the devastating events of the first season, the story is shifting to a different corner of Night City with a new cast and a completely separate storyline.
Few video game adaptations have found such a clear identity of their own, but Cyberpunk: Edgerunners did exactly that with its first season. Set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, the anime did far more than borrow the game’s imagery and neon-soaked cityscape: it told a standalone, brutally tragic story in the middle of Night City’s corporate nightmare. Netflix is now working on the follow-up, which will return to the same dystopian metropolis with a fresh cast and a new conflict. Rather than continuing David Martinez’s story directly, the new installment will open another chapter in the same universe.
Netflix unveiled the first new promotional image from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The artwork features a young blonde character holding a camera, and while no plot details have been confirmed, there is a strong chance that the image has introduced one of the season’s central new characters. The figure had already appeared in the earlier announcement trailer as part of the silhouette-filled reveal of the new ensemble, but this is the first time audiences have been able to get a proper look at them.
The second season was first announced in the summer of 2025, but Netflix still has not revealed an official release date. Should the series ultimately arrive in 2027, more than four years will have passed since the first season debuted in 2022. That is a long wait for one of Netflix’s most celebrated animated series, though it is not unusual for a large-scale production with this level of visual ambition. The delay also makes sense because Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is not simply extending the original plot, but building a new storyline, a new group of characters, and a new dramatic arc from the ground up in Night City.
Like the first installment, the new season is expected to consist of ten episodes running at roughly thirty minutes each. Japanese animation studio Studio Trigger is once again developing the project alongside CD Projekt RED, the studio behind Cyberpunk 2077. The story will remain set in the same universe, so familiar characters or locations from the game could still appear, much as they did in the first season, though nothing of that kind has been officially confirmed yet.
Netflix is not limiting its plans for the franchise to this anime alone. Another animated project set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077 is also in development, while a live-action adaptation first announced in October 2023 remains in the works. Anonymous Content, the company behind projects including The Revenant, Mr. Robot, and True Detective, is involved with the live-action version, but it is still unclear whether that project will become a feature film, a television series, or something else entirely.
