According to Tim Sweeney, AI Could Have Made Destiny 2 Profitable!

Epic Games’ founder and CEO has publicly defended artificial intelligence before, so this latest statement did not come as a major surprise.

Tim Sweeney suggested that artificial intelligence could have helped games like Destiny thrive. Epic Games’ CEO responded on X to reports about the financial situation surrounding Destiny 2.

“If only some sort of newfangled technology could come along and make it possible to overcome bullet point #1 and enable games like Destiny to thrive!” Sweeney wrote.

Sweeney also recently stated publicly that Steam is being particularly irresponsible by forcing studios to disclose their use of artificial intelligence. Valve’s system requires developers to detail when AI has been used during the production of a game.

In June, Epic Games announced that Unreal Engine 6 would include several AI tools intended to significantly reduce the more tedious and repetitive tasks of game development. Sweeney’s tweet included a screenshot of a Forbes article claiming that Destiny was only rarely profitable throughout its lifespan.

According to the article, one of the main reasons was the enormous amount of new content the game had to produce continuously. Sweeney’s remark implies that AI could somehow speed up the creation of content wanted by Destiny players, or perhaps generate that content entirely.

Interestingly, Sweeney did not address another major assertion in the Forbes article: that management immediately mishandled available financial resources during the periods when Destiny was profitable.

In August 2024, former Bungie employees called for then-CEO Pete Parsons to resign. Their accusations included claims that he had lied, stolen, and done many other things they felt unable to mention publicly.

Sharp-tongued outbursts are nothing new for Sweeney. In March 2024, he called Valve executives assholes in an email exchange that became public during an antitrust lawsuit against Valve.

He has never been one to mince words. He is blunt, and he is clearly willing to defend artificial intelligence with the same aggressive consistency.
