Digital Foundry has revealed that the PS5 versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II run at a native 1080p resolution without any anti-aliasing. According to the experts, the result is disappointingly poor and falls far below what the PS5 hardware is capable of delivering.
Some ports are presented as an opportunity to revive classic games that defined an era. Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II had remained locked to the PS3 on PlayStation, while both games could be played on modern Xbox consoles thanks to backward compatibility, although hackers are common in multiplayer matches. A few days ago, however, both Call of Duty titles were released for PS4 and PS5. While the pricing of Black Ops and Black Ops II on PlayStation has already attracted criticism, Digital Foundry believes that these re-releases were not handled particularly well either.
Digital Foundry Criticizes the Black Ops and Black Ops II PlayStation Ports
Many players are celebrating the fact that the campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies modes from Black Ops and Black Ops II are now playable on PS4 and PS5. Digital Foundry, however, considers the ports to be very poor. In a recent analysis published on its official website, the experts wrote that “the impression left after playing it is how little time, resources, and expertise Activision decided to invest in this project.” The analysis explains that both games run on PS5 at a native 1080p resolution without any form of anti-aliasing.
Digital Foundry considers the absence of anti-aliasing a serious problem, especially because most PS5 ports run at 4K by default. Without this filtering technique, the edges of objects and environments display more visible jagged lines, while movement produces additional flickering. The much lower resolution does not even result in a higher refresh rate, as the games are capped at 60Hz. Digital Foundry describes the result as “disappointingly poor and far below what the hardware is capable of.”
Curiously, even the Xbox versions do not fare much better, as they run through backward compatibility at an Xbox 360-era resolution of 608p, with lower-quality shadows and a darker image. Faced with this situation, Digital Foundry directly asks: “Why preserve this problem in the present when so much more graphical power is available?” The pricing does not help matters either, as the experts call it “simply astonishing” that Activision is charging €40 for such a poorly developed port, although PS Plus subscribers receive a 50% discount. At least Activision has confirmed that PS4 and PS5 players can matchmake with each other in Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II, but there is no cross-play with PS3 or any other platforms. In addition, Season Pass owners can be matched with players who do not own the Season Pass in both games.
