MOVIE NEWS – Warner Bros. has officially confirmed that the Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest feature film is in development. A new corporate earnings report places the large-scale fantasy project somewhere beyond 2027, making a 2029 theatrical debut a plausible possibility for now.
The Game of Thrones universe is going through what may be its busiest period since the original series ended in 2019. House of the Dragon delivered its third season on HBO Max this summer, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is already preparing to return. At the same time, the franchise’s parent company is navigating a $110 billion acquisition process that could reshape the wider business.
Yet the feature film may be the most important development for the brand’s long-term future. Warner Bros. formally announced Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest at CinemaCon in Las Vegas in April 2026. It will become the first theatrical spin-off set in George R. R. Martin’s world and the clearest move yet to expand Westeros beyond television.
An earnings report reveals the first broad window
The studio offered no timing information when it unveiled the project at CinemaCon. Warner Bros. Discovery’s second-quarter earnings call on August 6, together with its shareholder letter, has now provided the first meaningful indication of where the film sits on the company’s roadmap.
The document says the slate after 2027 will continue to draw on major intellectual properties. Aegon’s Conquest appears alongside The Matrix, the next Batman movie and a Jetsons feature starring Jim Carrey. The company described a strategy centered on extending valuable franchises, creating event-level theatrical releases and maintaining a varied portfolio for audiences around the world.
That positioning matches earlier reports that the film is being imagined as a spectacle on the scale of Dune. No release date has been confirmed, but with two Westeros television series already occupying the next few years, 2029 would offer Warner Bros. a relatively clear opening.
Aegon the Conqueror is heading to the big screen
The story unfolds centuries before the events of Game of Thrones. Aegon I Targaryen, a Valyrian lord, began the campaign that transformed Westeros alongside his two sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys.
With the dragons Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes, the Targaryens subdued and unified most of the continent, with Dorne remaining the major exception. The consequences of that conquest echo through almost every corner of the franchise.
The movie is also expected to depict the creation of the Iron Throne. Aegon had it forged from the melted weapons of his defeated enemies, turning it into the defining symbol of the saga. Viewers have already seen Balerion’s skull beneath the Red Keep, while House of the Dragon has made Vhagar familiar to modern audiences; the film could now present a younger version of that enormous dragon.
A former television idea became a theatrical project
Plans to adapt the Conquest have circulated for years. A prequel pitch centered on the same historical chapter dates back to 2017. By 2024, it was still being discussed as a television spin-off, with Mattson Tomlin attached at one stage, before Warner Bros. reshaped the concept into a movie.
HBO has meanwhile become more selective about which proposed expansions move forward. The Jon Snow series intended for Kit Harington was shelved after its team failed to find a continuation that they believed would do justice to the character.
House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will keep Westeros on television over the next several years. That gives the studio room to wait for the right theatrical moment for Aegon’s Conquest, even if the decision requires fans to remain patient.
