The cost of more advanced ray tracing in Insomniac Games’ upcoming title, set to release next week, is surprisingly low.
The PlayStation 5 Pro is currently the most powerful console on the market. It has proven time and again that its ray tracing capabilities and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling significantly outperform the base model. The upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine showcases the mid-generation console upgrade’s ray tracing capabilities even more impressively; it can handle the game’s most advanced ray tracing effects with barely noticeable performance degradation.
A new comparison video by ElAnalistaDeBits shows the game running on the base PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 5 Pro side by side to highlight the differences. The most noticeable differences are in the rendering resolution between the various display modes (internally dropping from 2160p to 1440p in Fidelity mode and to 1440p to 1080p in Performance mode) and in reflections and shadows. In terms of image quality, the PlayStation 5 Pro clearly wins thanks to PSSR, as well as certain reflections and global illumination details visible in Advanced RT mode.
Since ray-tracing effects can be demanding, you might be tempted to disable Advanced RT mode on the PlayStation 5 Pro for optimal performance, which can reach 100 FPS in Performance mode with Unlimited VRR enabled. However, ElAnalistaDeBits notes that the performance drop is negligible, about 3–4 FPS, so there’s hardly any reason not to keep these features enabled.
The PlayStation 5 Pro’s excellent ray tracing capabilities, demonstrated in Marvel’s Wolverine, bode well for Grand Theft Auto VI. The game will make full use of RT to create one of the most stunning open worlds yet. Although the game likely won’t run at 60 FPS on the console, sacrificing performance for 4K resolution, it will undoubtedly look its best on this system. This will be the best way to enjoy Grand Theft Auto VI before the PC release, which may not be as far off as some think. We’ve already written about this.
