Apple Vision Pro: The First Swallow of a Big Business Sector?

TECH NEWS – The company could make a strong business out of its currently under-marketed AR headset, and the new version of the device may not be the inferior model we’ve been hearing about.

We have previously reported that the Apple Vision Pro, with its cheaper hardware (chipset, display), will not be released until later, and that the Cupertino-based company may instead come up with the next-generation device. Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman, in his Power On newsletter, expects a release in the fall of 2025, possibly in the spring of 2026. The price would still be $3,500, but instead of the current M2 chip, the headset would use the upcoming M5, which is expected to offer improved performance and lower power consumption based on TSMC’s 2-nanometer manufacturing process.

According to Gurman, the Apple Vision Pro 2 would be the same size and design, so it would be lighter and thinner. The announcement could come at a time when the other devices using the M5 chip are being unveiled. Recently, M4 MacBook Pros with widescreen and ultra-wide displays were released to support Mac Virtual Display in VisionOS 2.2. The M4 Mac Mini and Vision Pro seem like a great pairing, but the company could still make a lot of money in the headset business.

“Apple still needs to find new sources of growth, of course. The iPhone isn’t going anywhere, but it’s not driving the sales it used to. So what’s the solution? To grow, the company can’t just wait for one big new opportunity – it needs multiple new device categories on the order of an iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch. That’s easier said than done. During the development of the Vision Pro, executives aspired for the device to eventually become an Apple Watch-sized hit – something that now seems unlikely. But perhaps a broader line of Vision wearable products (including things like smart glasses, augmented reality glasses, and iPhone-connected head-worn displays) could become a $25 billion business,” Gurman wrote.

So Apple should get serious.
