One Sonic Game’s Such a Flop That SEGA Boss Cries Out – Will He Deliver on His Promise?!

Although one of the last Sonic games was a “disappointment”, the SEGA president promises to surprise players by 2025…

SEGA is one of the most iconic companies in the gaming industry, known for creating Sonic and owning other major franchises and studios. We already know that SEGA has released several related games in recent years, and their most recent title has also proven to be successful. After all, Sonic X Shadow Generations has already sold over 1.5 million copies after a month of release. However, a game not long ago did not sell, and the company’s president is very disappointed about this.

SEGA president Shuji Utsumi told Eurogamer in an interview that Sonic Superstars was a huge “disappointment” in terms of sales, recalling that it was released in October 2023. At a time very close to another very successful multiplatform game, Super Mario Bros. to Wonder, which sold millions of copies. In contrast, SEGA has since released hits like Metaphor: ReFantazio, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, and Persona 3 Reload.

“We were trying to do something creative with Sonic Frontiers.”

“With Sonic Superstars it turned out to be a disappointment, in terms of the outcome compared to what we delivered. This time we have Sonic X Shadow Generations and the next movie, so we’re pushing things in the transmedia direction – movies and games working in harmony to make things bigger. But the core [of the experience] is the game. The game needs to be very good or else there is no transmedia effect” – points out Nintendo Everything.

The next Sonic game

“The Sonic X Shadow Generations game is actually very good, I would say awesome, action-wise. But starting next year, it’s going to be the next level, as you will just see at TGA,” he says. Sonic Racing: Crossworlds, a racing game starring the hedgehog and his friends that takes characters to different dimensions, was revealed at the GOTY 2024 gala. There is no release date, but it will be released “very soon” for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store).
