Will Grand Theft Auto VI Spark a Surge in Game Prices?

The $70 standard for this generation may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to Rockstar and Take-Two…

Grand Theft Auto VI has the attention of the gaming industry. The game will be released sometime in the fall for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series (and certainly not for PC until 2026, but we’re not ruling out a 2027 release), and many see the new GTA as the main growth driver for the gaming industry. Matthew Ball, in his presentation summarizing the state of the gaming industry at Epyllion (which we’ve written about elsewhere), also suggested that Grand Theft Auto VI could be a big boost for the industry alongside Nintendo Switch 2.

The release of Grand Theft Auto VI will only be partially positive, as Rockstar’s game will only be released on current generation consoles first, and the release will cannibalize time (and money) spent on other games. Several publishers are hoping that the price of the game will break the $70 price ceiling, so that the price of retail games can stabilize after decades of deflation, as the cost of game development has not only remained the same over the last 20 years, but has multiplied.

And because of this, you could be asked to pay up to $100 for the bigger titles. Even Grand Theft Auto VI. We can already imagine Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, explaining in two paragraphs that this is a premium product and they want to charge the users accordingly. As for the release date, other publishers are preparing in such a way that none of them wants to release a major game close to the new GTA, and many will even risk delaying the release until 2026.

We don’t know yet how much Take-Two will charge for Grand Theft Auto VI, but we’re sure that what one publisher does here, others will follow. After all, it’s as if they were the first to charge $70 for a piece of NBA 2K a few years ago…

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
