TECH NEWS — The Redmond-based tech giant claims its PCs are superior to Apple’s Macs, but that’s not entirely accurate.
Macs have taken the laptop market by storm, especially since Apple switched to its custom M-series chips. Microsoft is trying to catch up with Apple and now claims in a new ad that its products are faster than Macs. However, the comparison is made against the more than one-year-old M3 MacBook Air and not against any of the Pro models!
Apple recently introduced the M4 MacBook Air, offering better performance than last year’s M3 model. Last year, Apple also launched the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips with its 14” and 16” MacBook Pro models, pushing performance to new heights. So Microsoft is comparing its top-tier laptops to Apple’s entry-level MacBooks and claiming superiority.
Microsoft’s best Copilot+ Windows PCs are claimed to be 58% faster than the M3 MacBook Air based on Cinebench 2024 multi-core CPU benchmark results. The ad refers to performance data from as far back as May 2024, clearly ignoring Apple’s newer devices. In fine print, Microsoft admits that some Copilot+ PCs are also faster than the M4 MacBook Air (again based on Cinebench 2024). They compared the M3 MacBook Air to the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x with a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite, the Microsoft Surface Laptop with the same chip, and the HP OmniBook Ultra 14 powered by an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 375.
Apple leads the industry in performance-per-watt, offering better computational and graphical power while consuming less energy. The MacBook Air models are also fanless, providing a completely silent experience.
The M4 Pro and M4 Max chips are vastly superior to the base M3, yet Microsoft does not mention them at all…
