Kojima Is Losing Faith in the Industry? Even Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake Can’t Excite Him

It seems Hideo Kojima is more disappointed than ever with the state of gaming—and what’s even more telling, he doesn’t care about the Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake. The legendary creator behind Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding laments the industry’s lack of originality and calls for bolder risks and truly new ideas.

Kojima stands as a rare visionary in video games. His name is synonymous with innovation, thanks to the iconic Metal Gear Solid saga and the boundary-pushing Death Stranding. Yet, despite his legendary status, Kojima now openly expresses frustration at an industry he sees as creatively stagnant and dominated by safe bets.

Speaking with SSense, Kojima aired his concerns about how major studios are afraid to break the mold, relying on the same repetitive formulas. As he puts it, “Most AAA games these days are just about fighting alien monsters or wandering through medieval fantasy worlds.” For Kojima, this creative inertia is holding the medium back.

Kojima Wants the Industry to Take Real Risks

According to Kojima, true progress only comes when studios dare to break free from convention. He describes his own approach as always being about risk-taking and personal vision. While at Konami, he tried to balance business demands with creative integrity, but now, running Kojima Productions, he feels an even deeper duty to both his team and legacy. In this light, the commercial success of Death Stranding 2 proves that players are hungry for something different and original.

Why Kojima Isn’t Interested in the MGS3 Remake

Kojima’s disappointment even extends to high-profile remakes. Asked if he’d try the new Metal Gear Solid 3, he simply laughed and replied, “No, I won’t.” The journalist notes that Kojima appears unmoved by the idea of returning to a franchise that’s no longer his—a sharp contrast to Death Stranding, a universe he fully owns and shapes.

These days, Kojima’s focus is elsewhere: OD, his experimental horror project with Xbox, and Phsynt, a PlayStation-exclusive stealth-action game seen as the spiritual successor to Metal Gear. These are likely years away—around 2030—but in the meantime, fans can look forward to the Death Stranding anime and movie, both reportedly slated for 2027. Kojima concludes that only time can judge a game’s true worth: the real legacy is revealed years after release.
