According to one rumor, we already know what weapon the iconic hero of the franchise will wield, which may also confirm the location of the new God of War game.
In the latest episode of Insider Gaming’s weekly podcast, Tom Henderson, a reliable insider, shared some interesting information about Kratos and the next God of War game. He discussed that, according to rumors, the 2.5D Metroidvania spin-off will likely be announced at the next State of Play, which is rumored to air before the end of September. He then noted that Sony Santa Monica is working on a new mainline game and that Kratos will wield a new ancient Egyptian weapon.
“There’s some weird confusion because there is the Metroidvania game in development, and then there’s also a new mainline God of War game in development, which is kind of similar in theme. I think Kratos has an Egyptian sword this time, you know, like the curved Egyptian sword. I can’t remember what they’re called, but they’re similar to the ones in Prince of Persia,” Henderson said.
He is likely referring to the khopesh, a sickle-shaped sword that evolved from the battle axe in ancient Egypt. This would be a new weapon for Kratos. More importantly, it would hint at an Egyptian setting. Why else would he have such a weapon if he weren’t fighting in that region? The Scandinavian duology featured fitting weapons, such as the Leviathan Axe, which was historically favored by Scandinavian warriors.
This isn’t the first time Egypt has been linked to God of War. Before the release of the 2018 installment, Cory Barlog, the game’s director, said that, after covering Scandinavian mythology, future games could feature Egyptian or Mayan mythology. It’s been three years since the release of God of War: Ragnarök. However, if the rumors about a smaller Metroidvania game are true, then the next major installment likely won’t be released for a while.
