If you’re playing on PS4 or PS5, there’s a download waiting for you. Sony has rolled out a firmware update for both consoles: PS5 now moves to version 25.06-12.02.00, while PS4 jumps ahead to version 13.02.
It’s been five years since the PS5 launched and over a decade since the PS4 hit the market, but both consoles are still getting attention from Sony. The company has just released a firmware patch available right now for both devices. Don’t expect flashy new features, though – this one’s all about system security, not reinventing the way you play.
Specifically, PS5 has been updated to version 25.06-12.02.00, while PS4 moves up to version 13.02. As for what’s included, Sony’s official website keeps it short and sweet for both consoles: “We’ve made some security fixes to the system software.” Of course, sometimes firmware updates bring cool extras – the PS5 recently gained a new DualSense controller function and an optional power-saving mode – but this time, no such surprises are in store.
So what does “security fixes” really mean? For most gamers, it signals that Sony has patched vulnerabilities and potential exploits in the system. In plain terms, it’s about blocking hacks, stopping unauthorized access, and protecting the PS4 and PS5 community from risks. It’s Sony making sure you can keep playing without worrying about your console’s integrity.
PS5: The Most Profitable PlayStation Ever
It’s no wonder Sony is safeguarding its newest console. Since its launch in November 2020, the PS5 has generated $136 billion in revenue – a figure that easily surpasses the PS4’s $107 billion across its lifetime, and the PS3’s $71 billion. In terms of units sold, the latest numbers put PS5 at more than 80.3 million consoles shipped worldwide.
This is all great news for Sony. Yes, gamers have seen price hikes in recent years, but executives insist the PS5 is still the most profitable PlayStation generation ever. Now the big question is: how will Sony keep players hooked for the rest of the generation?
