Ridley Scott Unleashes Brutal Take on Hollywood: “Most of It Is Sh*t”

MOVIE NEWS – Legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott is once again pulling no punches, delivering one of his most brutal assessments of modern cinema. The Alien and Blade Runner director believes today’s movie landscape is overflowing with mediocrity, to the point where he’d rather watch his own films than what’s playing in theaters. While he admits there are occasional exceptions, Scott argues Hollywood has become addicted to playing it safe instead of taking creative risks.

Ridley Scott is known for speaking his mind, so his latest verbal broadside aimed at Hollywood shouldn’t surprise anyone. The legendary director, who helped shape some of the most influential franchises in film history, says he now prefers revisiting his own work to most of what’s released today. During a talk at London’s BFI Southbank, Scott declared: “The number of movies made globally today — millions, not thousands — and most of it is s**t.”

When asked which films he considers his “comfort watches,” Scott’s response was as scathing as ever. “Honestly, we’re drowning in mediocrity right now. So I’ve started watching my own films — and, you know what? They’re actually pretty good! And they don’t age. I watched Black Hawk Down the other night and thought, ‘How the hell did I pull that off?’ Once in a while a great one comes along, and it’s a relief to know someone out there is still making good movies.”

This isn’t the first time Scott has blasted Hollywood for its obsession with risk-averse, formulaic filmmaking. Throughout his career, he’s consistently taken bold creative risks and delivered visionary blockbusters, so he’s earned the right to criticize the industry’s current state. While his comments might gloss over a handful of standout titles, it’s hard to deny that the machine continues to churn out projects that are either painfully safe or tired rehashes of better ideas.

Movies like Sinners, Weapons, and Kpop Demon Hunters have shown that Hollywood can still produce compelling stories — at least when it’s not solely focused on expanding existing IP. And while franchises like Alien and Blade Runner have successfully evolved under new leadership in recent years, the overall trend still leans toward repetition and creative stagnation.

Ultimately, Scott argues that Hollywood’s obsession with superhero movies and endless remakes is holding the industry back. Fresh new voices continue to emerge, but studios are far more likely to greenlight a safe, fan-favorite project than take a gamble on something original.
