The Running Man Has More Schwarzenegger References Than You’d Expect

MOVIE NEWS – The new version of The Running Man isn’t a remake of the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, its creators insist.

Although it’s adapted from the same Stephen King novel (published under the Richard Bachman pen name in 1982), Edgar Wright’s take is a standalone film that’s more faithful to the source material than the earlier version. Still, because Schwarzenegger made the story famous, the new Running Man is peppered with nods to the Austrian icon.

Director Edgar Wright says there are dozens of subtle references to Arnie throughout. Some are blink-and-you-miss-it — like his face appearing briefly on in-world banknotes. Others are obvious: lead actor Glen Powell quotes the Terminator’s iconic line, “I’ll be back.” “But I don’t say it with an Austrian accent. That will always belong to Arnie — I do it my way,” Powell told Empire.

Wright adds that there are several more Easter eggs like these, and a few will be tough to spot even for sharp-eyed fans.
