Strauss Zelnick is particularly confident about the next installment of BioShock, even though Ken Levine is not working on it. However, he will be releasing something soon.
Irrational Games released BioShock Infinite 12.5 years ago. Then, the series’ creator, Ken Levine, decided to disband the studio and found the much smaller Ghost Story Games, which is currently working on Judas. Levine recently stated that Judas has certain similarities to BioShock but differs from it in many ways. At the end of 2019, 2K announced that Cloud Chamber, a new studio based in Novato, California, would take over the BioShock IP. Cloud Chamber has had its own problems. It rebooted the project in 2023 and carried out a major layoff in August, affecting approximately 80 employees. According to reliable sources, this postponed the release of the new BioShock to the second half of 2027.
Former studio head Kelley Gilmore was replaced by industry veteran Rod Fergusson, who has worked at Epic Games, The Coalition, and Blizzard, among others. Fergusson is known for his expertise in studio turnarounds and focusing resources on shipping the game, which is exactly what is needed here. During Take-Two’s Q2 2026 earnings call—where the second delay of Grand Theft Auto VI was announced—CEO Strauss Zelnick said the game is on track to take the franchise to the next level.
“We’re thrilled to have Rod leading Cloud Chamber. He is now heading up the BioShock franchise. He’s clearly an incredible industry veteran. He has a history with the BioShock franchise, particularly with Infinite. He’s also worked on Gears of War and Diablo. We’re so grateful he’s come to work with us at Cloud Chamber. BioShock is a very important franchise for us. It’s one of our biggest. We’re excited about the release of the next BioShock game. We’ve made some organizational changes. We’re shifting some things around. Right now, we feel that the game is on the right track to exceed consumers’ expectations. There isn’t much else to update other than the fact that the next BioShock will take the franchise to the next level, which is always our ambition with all of our franchises,” said Zelnick.
In the meantime, fans can look forward to Judas, which Zelnick says will likely be released before BioShock 4.
