MOVIE NEWS – There is a detail in the first five minutes of Stranger Things season five that hardly anyone is discussing. If the Duffer Brothers don’t address it, the entire series could be at risk. Will and Vecna’s connection finally makes sense, but it also throws the door open to a wave of theories.
Netflix surprised viewers by releasing the first five minutes of Stranger Things season five ahead of the November 26 premiere. If it was not obvious before, Will Byers will be a central protagonist in the new run because his connection to Vecna sits at the heart of the plot. The short preview clarifies exactly how their bond was forged. The twist lands when Vecna loops back to season one, reframing what we thought we knew. But hold on, it is not that simple. After several rewatches, I agree with many fan theories circulating online, yet I still have a major question that barely anyone is raising.
How does Vecna know Will Byers?
The Duffer Brothers have paced the mythos of Stranger Things deliberately. In season one, we saw the Demogorgon abduct Will, which led us to think it was the worst threat in the Upside Down. Seasons two and three positioned the Mind Flayer as the mastermind of the other realm. Season four finally unmasked the true villain: Vecna.
Henry Creel, the human behind the monster, aims to return to Hawkins’ reality to control or destroy it, while seizing the chance to take revenge on Eleven. His story now extends beyond the series thanks to the stage play, which fills in his life before becoming Vecna. That context matters, since it seems essential to understanding his interest in Will.
Back to the opening minutes of season five. They reveal what Will experienced upon arriving in the Upside Down. We now know that he tried to escape the Demogorgon, but it captured him and took him to Vecna. Once there, he was controlled by the villain and left in a position where Joyce and Hopper later found him. From here, it feels clear that the season one light flickers were Vecna’s orchestration to pull Will back into the narrative.
Many theories focus on whether or not Will died in the Upside Down, and they seem to have overlooked one thing: how did Vecna know Will? According to one line in the trailer, the villain calls him by name and says that together they will do “very nice things.”
Looking at season four, it is logical to think that Vecna connected with him the same way he did with Max, Chrissy, or Fred, but there is a difference: he targeted his victims by exploiting pain, loss, and trauma. His choice of these individuals was based on seeking out tormented people. In Will’s case, the fixation seems much more concrete and specific. I cannot stop thinking about the reason for that choice.
This is where the play The First Shadow comes in. Thanks to it, we learn that Henry acquires his powers when he accidentally falls into Dimension X, and from that moment on, his life goes awry. He becomes a troubled, lonely young man with few social connections. After much reflection, I have come to the conclusion that Will’s selection is based on their shared negative background. Recalling the early chapters, Joyce described him as a boy “who has a couple of friends,” “different from the other kids,” and who is bullied, even by his own father.
It seems like a reasonable explanation, but I am taking it with a grain of salt for now. Other questions are also nagging at me: why did Vecna choose that moment, how did he connect with Will, and did he have a way to do it without open portals? If we go by the show’s lore, the first current portal was opened by Eleven when she contacted the Demogorgon, and it is almost simultaneous with Will’s disappearance. On the other hand, the First Shadow makes it clear that the Mind Flayer is the one controlling Vecna. So who is the real villain? Is it all a plan by the Mind Flayer? The animosity seems too personal to be orchestrated by a faceless entity.
Some theories attempt to reconcile both perspectives. One of the most striking suggests that Will is a kind of builder. His mind would have the ability to shape the Upside Down, making him a perfect vessel for Vecna or the Mind Flayer. We always see him drawing and daydreaming. Personally, I think this ability does not make much sense with the information we currently have. In the end, it is easy to think he was simply unlucky, but the series hints at a more elaborate plan, and I trust it will be properly explained. The Duffer Brothers rarely disappoint.
