Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa shared this during a Q&A held right after the release of the fiscal year’s third-quarter results (via GoNintendo). Discussing the hybrid system’s near-term trajectory, the executive said that “the second and third years of the Switch 2 will be extremely important, and if we increase hardware availability, we can use that as a foundation to significantly increase software sales.”
It is a logical progression. The more Nintendo Switch 2 units are out in the market, the more games will be sold. Still, Nintendo believes sales in 2026 and 2027 will be especially crucial for the console’s future, and everything suggests results from those periods will be weighed when plans are revised or the original strategy is adjusted. After all, despite the milestone the Switch 2 has reached, Nintendo has admitted it was hoping for even higher figures.
Nintendo Switch 2 Sales Outside Japan Have Been “Slightly Weaker Than Expected”
That was another detail Furukawa revealed after the financial report presentation. According to the Nintendo president, “domestic hardware sales volume exceeded our expectations, while overseas sales were slightly weaker than anticipated.” Specifically, we know Switch 2 holiday sales were down by roughly 35% in the United States (compared to the original Switch in 2017), 16% in the United Kingdom, and 5.5% in Japan.
