MOVIE NEWS – James Wan and Rob Savage’s new horror film is promising scares from a very different angle. One of The Other Mommy’s biggest hooks is that the audience experiences the terror through the eyes of a child.
Two major figures of modern horror, James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring) and Rob Savage (The Last Ritual, The Boogeyman), have joined forces to bring one of the decade’s most disturbing stories to the screen. They promise that The Other Mommy will stand out from more ordinary horror films by offering a fresh perspective: the audience will experience the shocking events from the point of view of a small child.
The story centers on eight-year-old Bela (Arabella Olivia Clark), who is going through a painful time as her parents’ marriage falls apart. In that vulnerable state, a strange entity enters her life, one she refers to as the other mommy. The creature calls to her from the darkness of her bedroom closet and asks her the same deeply unsettling question every single day: “Can I move into your heart?” Bela has no desire to answer yes, and because of that, the entity grows increasingly aggressive and dangerous, eventually becoming a direct threat to the entire family.
Beyond the unusual child’s-eye perspective, the film’s other major attraction is Oscar winner Jessica Chastain. She has already proved herself in the genre before (Mama, It – Chapter Two, Crimson Peak), but this role presents a particularly unusual challenge. In the film she plays the real mother, a woman who has to fight not only the collapse of her private life, but also a supernatural rival trying to steal her face and her place inside the family.
