MOVIE NEWS – Elijah Wood’s latest comments strongly suggest that a new actor may indeed take over the role of Aragorn in the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The name most often linked to the role has been Leo Woodall, and Wood reacted to that possibility in a way that made it sound like far more than idle speculation. Nothing has been made official yet, but the remark was still revealing enough to get people talking.
It is difficult to identify the single best casting choice in Peter Jackson’s original The Lord of the Rings trilogy, because the filmmaker had an extraordinary instinct for blending major actors with lesser-known names. A strong case could be made for Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf or John Rhys-Davies as Gimli, but Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn was equally inspired. He brought not only the physical authority and emotional weight the role demanded, but also the humility that made Aragorn feel genuinely worthy of the crown.
That is exactly why rumors of a new actor stepping into the role in the next film have drawn so much attention. Among the names floated, Leo Woodall has emerged as one of the strongest possibilities, and Elijah Wood now seems to have added weight to that speculation during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. When the host discussed how difficult it would be to take over the role of Aragorn and mentioned Woodall by name, Wood replied, “Right, that is true. Those are tough boots, I can’t imagine, but that’s gonna be great.”
The comment immediately stood out because it sounded as though Wood had briefly acknowledged something that had not yet been officially announced. He then appeared to catch himself and shifted the conversation toward the broader challenge of inheriting such an iconic part. Kate Winslet’s reported involvement in the movie also came up, and Wood responded by saying she had been announced before quickly adding that things would be different if Frodo himself were in the picture. That only fueled speculation that he, too, may return in some form.
Andy Serkis is already confirmed to reprise Gollum while also directing the film, and Ian McKellen is likewise expected back as Gandalf. Wood has previously said he would be happy to play Frodo again, and has admitted that as long as he is alive and able, he would find it hard to imagine anyone else taking over the role. The new movie is set between Bilbo’s 111th birthday – which opens The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring – and Frodo’s arrival in Rivendell. In other words, it covers the stretch of time when Gandalf is researching the Ring and Aragorn is still hunting Gollum before joining the Hobbits.
