Crimson Desert: Even the South Korean Prime Minister Congratulated the Devs on Their Success!

What Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was for the French may now be what the recently released Crimson Desert from Pearl Abyss is for South Koreans.

Crimson Desert has been a huge success, though maybe it has not fully convinced everyone yet. Perhaps some extra persuasion is still needed over whether it truly deserves all the hype. But maybe you do not need to take our word for it. South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok may be a more relevant voice here. He recently praised Crimson Desert on Twitter and shared his thoughts after noting that the game’s sales figures are historically significant for the country. Beyond the sales itself, he also acknowledged the game’s aesthetics and design for incorporating Korean cultural elements.

“We sincerely congratulate Crimson Desert on its achievement, which has elevated the status of the Korean game industry on the global stage. It reached 5 million copies sold in just 26 days after launch, the shortest time in the history of Korean console gaming. By naturally incorporating taekwondo and Korean cuisine, it has opened a new chapter in the story of K-content. This accomplishment marks a decisive turning point, proving that the domestic game industry can expand and move forward on platforms beyond consoles as well,” Kim Min-seok wrote.

He said the government is assuming responsibility and offering active support, emphasizing that K-games can shine as one of the pillars of K-content. It will be interesting to see whether that means concrete financial backing for the arts from the government or simply a firm thumbs-up on Twitter. Either way, this level of recognition is an impressive result for Pearl Abyss and further evidence that governments are increasingly willing to promote the cultural value of games as art rather than treating them merely as fast money-making tools.

We will see whether Crimson Desert ends up receiving the same kind of ceremonial acclaim as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which is still collecting trophies a year after release.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
