After 20 Years, Nvidia’s Control Panel Is Bidding Farewell!

TECH NEWS – The tool was a stalwart on the “green” side, but time has finally caught up with it. Nvidia has moved on.

The popular Nvidia GPU tool, the Nvidia Control Panel, was released in February 2006 with ForceWare version 83.60. Since then, it has remained the most frequently used utility on Nvidia GPU-based systems. From simple settings like refresh rate and resolution to adjusting multi-monitor configurations and managing 3D settings, the control panel has remained one of the easiest-to-use and most versatile solutions for Nvidia GPUs.

Previously, Nvidia recommended using its latest application to modify these settings because it announced that the Nvidia Control Panel was on the verge of being phased out. In a blog post about the latest GeForce driver for 007: First Light, Nvidia officially announced the retirement of the control panel after 20 years of service. The company shared information to help clear up any confusion about the retirement.

“After 20 years of dedicated service, the classic Nvidia Control Panel is officially retiring for Game Ready and Studio Drivers. For Nvidia RTX Pro users, the Nvidia Control Panel will continue to be supported until professional features have been migrated to the Nvidia app. Existing installations of the Nvidia Control Panel will remain on users’ systems unless they perform a clean installation. Users who still need the Nvidia Control Panel can continue to download it from the Microsoft Store. However, we won’t be adding features, fixes, or other changes,” wrote Nvidia.

The company recommended that users of Nvidia GPUs install the Nvidia app, which offers all the modern features of the Control Panel but with a slightly different interface. For example, the Graphics > Program Settings option replaces the 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings menu item in the Nvidia Control Panel. All other display options and settings are now located on the System tab in the Nvidia app.

And so, another era comes to a close for Nvidia. The Nvidia Control Panel has been around since the days of Windows XP – yes, that long ago!
