After a brief announcement a year and a half ago, we finally got a closer look at Fumito Ueda’s next game.
During The Game Awards 2024, Ueda, known for creating games such as Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian, and Ico, unveiled his new game after several years of silence. The game was known at the time as Project Robot. At Summer Game Fest, Ueda and the genDesign team revealed the official title, Gen Atlas, and showcased some gameplay. While the trailer didn’t include a release date, it conveyed the game’s atmosphere. The official description provides more details.
“Without knowing why, you awaken on an abandoned planet. Before you lies a vast, silent world. Colossal structures stretch over endless plains, deserted facilities, and an ever-changing sea. The remnants of some grand design litter the planet’s surface. As you journey deeper into this strange world, a colossal robot awaits you. Its overwhelming power opens paths to places once beyond reach, changing your perception of the world. Across an endless expanse of time, the remnants of those forgotten constructs begin to move once more. Gen Atlas is a single-player, open-world, action-adventure game,” the game’s description says.
Regardless of what kind of gaming experience Gen Atlas ultimately delivers, it will likely be worth checking out from a creator of such historical significance. The video reveals that we can expect plenty of third-person action, as well as epic battles between massive robots. Of course, we’ll have to wait until we can play the game ourselves to grasp the essence of the story, which, if Ueda’s previous works are any indication, will be deeply moving.
“The team and I are grateful to all the fans eager to learn more about our game. Their passion and enthusiasm have always motivated and inspired us. We hope to share an experience that inspires moments of quiet wonder and discovery,” said Ueda in a statement on the game’s reveal.
Gen Atlas is coming to the PlayStation 5, the Xbox Series, and PC via the Epic Games Store.
