Unlike Hello Games after No Man’s Sky’s initial launch, the Polish team hasn’t fully regained trust yet.
CD Projekt RED, or CDPR, suffered a severe blow to its excellent reputation with the release of Cyberpunk 2077 due to severe bugs and poor console performance on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. This forced Sony to remove the game from the PlayStation Store until the bugs were fixed a few months later. The Polish studio worked hard to resolve all technical issues and improve the game’s features and content. This culminated in the release of the 2.0 update and the Phantom Liberty expansion, both of which were well received. As of last November, 35 million copies of Cyberpunk 2077 had been sold, and the game once again became appealing to players.
Now that CDPR is primarily focusing on The Witcher IV, the question arises as to whether the community has fully forgiven them. In an interview with EDGE Knowledge’s weekly newsletter, Michał Nowakowski, the company’s co-chairman, acknowledged that some users may still harbor resentment over the events surrounding Cyberpunk 2077. However, the executive hopes to win everyone back eventually, perhaps with The Witcher IV or a future title. Nowakowski emphasized that something positive has come out of the difficulties: the developers have become battle-hardened veterans. CDPR has an ambitious plan spanning more than ten years. It includes the new The Witcher trilogy, a remake of The Witcher being developed by Fool’s Theory, Project Sirius, a rebooted multiplayer The Witcher spin-off being developed by Molasses Flood, now part of CDPR, Cyberpunk 2, and the mysterious new IP, Project Hadar. Nowakowski emphasized that CDPR will never become a studio that releases games every year.
“I’m not 100% convinced that we went through the full redemption arc. I believe that we lost the faith of some people indefinitely, and that’s understandable. But I hope we’ll be able to win them back, either with The Witcher IV or whatever comes next. We were left with seasoned, battle-hardened veterans – leaders who can handle a different kind of challenge. Our dream is to make more games, but we never want to become a studio that launches a big game every year. That may happen, but it’s not our goal. We have a rough ten-year plan, but our goal isn’t to flood the gaming market with CDPR games. We just want to make really cool games. We don’t want a ton of IPs either. We’re not planning to grow in that way,” Nowakowski said.
The studio’s first attempt will be in 2027 with the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past, the third expansion for the 2015 game. Although development is being carried out in collaboration with Fool’s Theory, fans will primarily judge CDPR, especially in light of what happened with Cyberpunk 2077.
