Despite the Silence, Is Fallout 3 Remastered Footage Already Circulating? [VIDEO]

Although Bethesda Game Studios (BGS), Xbox Game Studios, and Microsoft aren’t talking about it, something is indeed in the works behind the scenes.

Fallout 3 Remastered is one of the worst-kept secrets in the gaming industry. Xbox originally disclosed the information during the FTC hearing regarding the Activision Blizzard acquisition. Since then, retail listings for game-related merchandise have repeatedly suggested that the project is in active development for PC and modern consoles. Although BGS has not made an official announcement, veteran game journalist Jeff Gerstmann recently revealed that footage of the project is already circulating.

“In fact, someone else has put quite a lot of work into a Fallout 3 remake that has yet to officially materialize. I don’t know if that game is still in development or if it has been canceled. Who can say? But I have seen footage of a Fallout 3 remake, so someone, somewhere, made something,” Gerstmann said during the latest episode of The Jeff Gerstmann Show.

While the footage of Fallout 3 Remastered that Gerstmann saw does not explicitly indicate that the project is currently in active development, all signs point to that being the case. In addition to the aforementioned retail leaks, which are historically reliable because they are based on plans made available by developers months or years in advance, BGS has switched to a franchise-first model following Microsoft’s latest major round of layoffs, which eliminated 3,200 jobs.

Since Fallout is one of the key franchises on which Bethesda and Microsoft are building their futures, it would be highly unlikely that Fallout 3 Remastered, which has been in development for years, would be canceled. However, surprising cancellations have occurred in the industry before. There have been more than a few such cases within Xbox Game Studios (e.g., Scalebound).
