The Witcher 4’s 2028 release window has left more fans worried that the game could be available only digitally on PlayStation and Xbox. CD Projekt RED has not announced a disc-free launch, but the console market’s rapid shift is already raising serious questions.

CD Projekt RED recently narrowed the release target for The Witcher 4 to 2028, leaving players roughly two more years before Ciri’s new adventure arrives. That timing could coincide with an era in which console manufacturers push digital distribution even more aggressively.

Reports about the future of physical PlayStation releases have been particularly troubling for the series’ audience. Many The Witcher fans are collectors who would like to own not only a standard boxed copy, but also a substantial collector’s edition.

The Xbox situation offers little reassurance because Game Pass and the “Xbox Everywhere” strategy have long prioritized digital access. If disc drives become even less common during the next console generation, a broad physical edition could be difficult to produce even if CD Projekt wants one.

It is important to stress that a digital-only release is not official information. CD Projekt RED has not confirmed the game’s distribution formats, and a disc version could still emerge through a specialist partner or as a limited-run edition.
