Ziggurat Interactive is remastering Sanitarium, originally developed by DreamForge Intertainment, to make it available on most modern platforms.

Sanitarium Enhanced is an updated edition of the renowned psychological horror adventure game Sanitarium. First released on PC in 1998 and named Adventure Game of the Year, this timeless point-and-click horror game now features full controller support for the first time, as well as quality-of-life improvements and never-before-seen bonus materials.

You awaken disfigured and with amnesia in a decaying asylum, with no memory of who you are or how you got there. Escaping your cell is only the beginning: each chapter pulls you deeper into a series of nightmarish worlds — a village of deformed children, a town of insectoid mutations and a circus of the grotesque — as you piece together the fractured truth of your own identity.

Widescreen resolution is now supported during gameplay. There is also an optional hint mode to help you find interactables. There is also controller support and Steam Deck optimisations. There is also an extras gallery with bonus content, including never-before-seen material from the original development team. Quality-of-life improvements include an optional movement speed toggle. Legacy bugs and issues have been fixed.

In the fall of 1998, our editor-in-chief said the following about the game (we’ve shortened it slightly): “The storytelling in Sanitarium is so masterful that Stephen King could retire—he’d be envious of it. We were glued to our seats, gradually uncovering Sanitarium’s secrets and the protagonist’s past, piece by piece. We were never bored and were able to immerse ourselves much more deeply in the story. It was also a great idea to make our hero a bandaged, self-tormented character. The puzzles are finally truly logical and fit well into the story. In our opinion, a good adventure game isn’t one where you have to struggle with nonsensical puzzles that can only be solved by trial and error just to move forward. Sanitarium is definitely a contender for Adventure Game of the Year, and that’s no small feat.”

Sanitarium Enhanced is set to be released sometime this year for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
