MOVIE NEWS – Artificial, starring Andrew Garfield, will have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 5. Luca Guadagnino’s film dramatizes OpenAI’s 2023 leadership crisis and the extraordinary days surrounding Sam Altman’s firing and return.

 
After months of uncertainty, Artificial finally has a confirmed place on the film calendar. The movie will debut as part of the 64th New York Film Festival, with its world premiere scheduled for October 5, 2026, at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center.

Garfield plays OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, while the story focuses on the turbulent weekend in 2023 when the company’s board removed him before reinstating him only days later. Monica Barbaro portrays Mira Murati, Yura Borisov plays Ilya Sutskever, and the cast also includes Mark Rylance alongside Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk.

Amazon MGM Studios originally developed the project and planned to distribute the nearly $40 million production, but the company unexpectedly stepped away from the film. The move drew additional attention because Amazon had recently entered a major business agreement with OpenAI, although the studio maintained that the movie would be better served by another distributor.

Artificial was ultimately acquired by Neon, which is preparing an awards-season push for Guadagnino’s film. The festival premiere is now official, but the exact wider theatrical release plan has yet to be announced, making the October screening the first public look at one of the year’s most closely watched technology dramas.
