Bad News for The Witcher Remake: Development Cannot Move Forward Yet

The Witcher Remake cannot move forward until CD Projekt finishes building the technological foundations of The Witcher 4. As a result, Fool’s Theory’s project may not arrive before 2029.

The complete reimagining of the classic RPG began with considerable promise, but its production is now closely tied to work on The Witcher 4. The remake depends on the assets, tools, technology and production pipeline that CD Projekt is developing for the new mainline game in Unreal Engine 5.

The Witcher 4 takes priority

Michał Nowakowski previously explained that the workflows of the two projects had been partially merged, while part of Fool’s Theory’s staff is directly supporting the The Witcher 4 team. Only a smaller group, largely made up of managers and key developers, is currently assigned to the remake, as the studio also contributes to new The Witcher 3 content.

The strategy should eventually allow the remake to rely on proven technology instead of forcing both teams to build the same systems twice. The drawback is that full production cannot accelerate until The Witcher 4 reaches a sufficiently advanced stage.

Based on the current order of development, the rebuilt first The Witcher may not launch on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series before 2029. That date is not official, but it appears to be the earliest realistic window given the studio’s overlapping commitments.
