Video Games Chronicle has interviewed Atsushi Inaba, the studio head of PlatinumGames. Well, they are preparing things „never seen before.”
Regarding Bayonetta 3, he said that it will see a change in the design process based on PlatinumGames’ experience they gained during developing the previous two titles. It could probably mean that the Nintendo Switch-exclusive title might need time to be released.
PlatinumGames, which is also moving towards self-publishing to have „freedom” over its IPs and make independent decisions, is halfway into developing an unannounced title. „[it is something that] has never been done before. I know a lot of people say that, but the game we’re working on truly is unlike anything else. Even for our varied history of veteran game developers, this is something that has never been designed before. So from a game design perspective, we’re very excited right now,” Inaba said.
„2019 will be an incredibly important year for us. Without speaking directly to the number of titles we may or may not announce, I can say it’s going to be a year of some major new approaches, new challenges and new methods for us. Basically, we’re building a new foundation that in later years will pay dividends. For us, new challenges are going to be very important,” he added.
These new approaches will include a shift away from dependence on external publisher funding, and they will also look into how it structures the game design. They also work on two new, unannounced IPs owned by the studio (and one of those could be this revolutionary project).
However, they will not stop with third-party collaborations: „There are still going to potentially be games in which we partner with publishers to do big things with big IPs. There might be some co-publishing options where we’re doing some of it and they’re doing some of it to make a larger game, and there might be situations where we’re going to be self-publishing larger games as well,” Inaba said.
So, there is a bright future in front of PlatinumGames. We believe them – why shouldn’t we? Most of their games were good.
