The Witcher 3 on Switch? It’s been four years (!) since Geralt of Rivia received his final part of the trilogy on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Since then, the PlayStation 4 Pro, the Xbox One X, and the Nintendo Switch have launched – could Nintendo’s successful, portable device receive this game after all this time?
Jeuxvideo-Live claims that multiple Asian retailers are listing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for the Nintendo Switch. Well, we have a few thoughts about it, as the image following this sentence makes us doubt it all:
On Taobao.com, one of the biggest Chinese digital stores, The Witcher 3 surfaced for the Nintendo Switch. Sure, ResetEra has previously discussed the game potentially getting a September release, making Geralt a portable thing, but we have to also point out the obvious technical hills that the developers have to climb.
Sure, we have seen other open-world games launch on the Switch, but we have also seen how the result was a god awful port – a prime example of how not to port such a game was ARK: Survival Evolved, which can easily be called the most disgusting-looking game on the Switch in 2018 -, so CD Projekt RED has to do some serious work to make it a QUALITY port, if they actually are planning to do one. (They HAVE TO make compromises, as the Switch hardware is weaker than what the PS4/X1 duo can offer.)
Another possible route for the game could be the cloud, but Resident Evil 7 has already tried that before on the Switch – if that’s the case, then what is the point of all these Taobao listings? You don’t get a cartridge and/or a case for a cloud-based game.
So, we have our doubts. If Nintendo does announce a port of the game in June during its Nintendo E3 Direct, then we’ll gladly eat the humble pie regarding Geralt moving to a new platform. Until then, we’ll take this with a huge grain of salt.
