Bethesda is playing a few tricks.

Let’s start with the announcements – Bethesda and id Software have made the ’93 Doom, Doom II, and Doom 3 (Doom Trilogy) available digitally on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The first two games run on the Unity engine, and cost five dollars apiece, while Doom 3 costs ten dollars. The first Doom has Episode IV: Thy Flesh Consumed with nine new levels, as well as four-player deathmatch and co-op (which is also available in Doom II). Doom II includes The Master Levels with twenty levels. Doom 3 has Resurrection of Evil, as well as The Lost Missions expansions. (The first two Doom games are now also on iOS and Android.)

On Twitter, Daan Koopman writes that there’s some DRM on the Doom trilogy on consoles, as you need a Bethesda.net account to play them. Okay, it makes sense as they are digital downloads, but if the servers go down or get shut down, then the players are out of luck. Sure, you only need to log in once to play offline, but it’s still not fair – the logging in might not work in the future. (Then Bethesda will likely re-release the games on PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Project Scarlett…)

The Doom franchise is celebrating its 25th birthday, but what about those who already had the first two Doom games on Xbox One via the Xbox One backwards compatibility? (Also Doom 3.) Here’s the twist: if you have the games but not have them installed, you can’t instantly install them even if you have the right to do so… but, thankfully, there are solutions to the issue, as seen on Reddit: „You can redownload them. Go to the Doom or Doom II club (one easy route is by finding the achievements on your profile) and select “See in Microsoft Store” from the main page of the club. It should say “You own this game” and the install button should be available. Another approach is if you have the games in your recent played or recently updated/installed lists. If you try to start them from there it will pop up a dialogue with a button to see the game in the store. You can then install from there. I inserted my Doom 3 BFG Edition disc and that queued up all 3 games so that is another method to install.”
