Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, believes that the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X will not halt the big N’s progress.

We’re seeing a lot of fiscal earnings reports (Nintendo, Electronic Arts), because as 2019 ended, so did the current fiscal year’s third quarter. Several investors ask questions, and they have done so towards Nintendo as well.

„We will explain the specific figures for the next fiscal year in our next fiscal year announcement, but I think there will certainly be a change in the environment as new products of our competitors appear. We do not believe that the business trends of other companies will have a significant impact on our business. Rather than just the next year, I think about things in terms of what to do the following year and the year after that,” Furukawa said.

In short, he doesn’t believe the Nintendo Switch will be impacted by the launch of the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X, due to the Switch (plus its more portable Switch Lite) aiming at a different audience (and with a lot of success: having 52 million sales in less than three years is outstanding – it’s already more than the lifetime sales of the SNES, the Nintendo 64, the GameCube, and the Wii U).

Nintendo thus continues to walk its unique path to avoid direct competition with Sony and Microsoft. Even its life cycle is differing from the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X (the Switch, which launched in March 2017, is hitting its fourth year shortly, being „in the middle” of the cycle), and since there will be no new, stronger Switch model this year (we wonder if Furukawa meant the fiscal year, ending in March, or the calendar year…?), they will focus on great exclusives and high-quality ports.

Still, things could change: Sony’s Remote Play might show up on the Nintendo Switch…
